Ice Road Trucker Style
Ever since we realized we were heading up to The Pas, J.’s been talking about ice roads. There are a bunch of them around – most long-distance tracks that bring people and supplies into isolated reserves.
But we’ve also got one just up the street from us: a mini-version that gives fishermen an alternate route across the Saskatchewan River.
This weekend, to take the edge off the cabin fever, J. and I did a bit of car-hiking, including following the track over the ice.
I’ll admit I was nervous at first but once you see a few half-tonne trucks leading the way, you start to trust in the solidity of the water’s surface.

Love the chapeau and the shades, J.
Holy Crapola!!!! I would be so scared!! Haven’t you guys read any horror novels??????? Even if the ice is a mile thick I’d have to wear a pontoon boat suit!!!!
Still, you got to do something new, on something cold, so that’s cool!
Jayne*who was scared for all three minutes of the video, until I saw the bare road*

You guys are living the northern dream. That last ice hut on the way over looks like an actual house.

Looks like a neat little adventure! Hope you guys carry a winter emergency kit for when you want to do some car hiking farther afield. Just a thought.

I was scared. Now I’m addicted. Probably a lot of ice-fishermen are wondering who the hell the Ontario Subaru people are who keep crossing their river!

Good idea! We’ll do that before we drive somewhere far (in other words, leave town…)
